Compensation claim dismissed

A woman’s attempt to receive compensation from the company that fired her for secretly recruiting her relatives has been rejected by the People’s Court of Pudong New Area.

The woman surnamed Wu was recruited by the American company HP in 2001. Her posts included being the firm’s marketing manager and operation manager for its branch in China.

She was fired in early 2014 when HP found she had used her position to recruit her brother and sister-in-law without revealing her relationship to them to the company.

Investigation showed she had implied her subordinates recruited her brother and that she had attended an interview with her sister-in-law. The couple joined her department and were subsequently promoted.

HP said employees were required to report any family links to the company to avoid possible conflicts of interest.

Wu said her brother and his wife had never caused any loss to the company and she sought 660,000 yuan (US$95,740) in compensation for losing her job.

According to the court, Wu signed her agreement to the company’s rules. Her request for compensation was rejected.
