Confusion over museum鈥檚 old signboard

AFTER complaints from troubled tourists, authorities are finally waking up and changing a signboard that directed visitors to the old Shanghai Museum of Natural History.
The museum on 260 Yan’an Road E. in Huangpu District was shut down on May 12 and will be moved to a new location in Jing’an District later this year.
But the sign at the intersection of Xizang Rd M. and Yan’an Rd E. directing visitors to the museum “800 meters away” still stands, misleading visitors.
One of them was a tourist surnamed Liu from Nantong, Jiangsu Province. Her son wanted to visit the museum after spotting the board from a car last week, the Youth Daily reported.
It was a rainy day and it took Liu some time to reach the “museum” only to learn that it no longer exists. A notice on the door said the museum was closed for good and was being relocated to another district, leaving Liu angry and upset.
“That sign board should be dismantled or changed because it is very misleading, particularly for tourists from outside of Shanghai,” she said.
The board, big and easy to notice, has an arrow directing visitors to the site of the former museum. It is about 2.5 meters long and 1.5 meters wide.
A staff worker at the old museum said too many tourists were being misled by the sign, implying it was happening all too frequently.
Some tourism websites and guide books were also not updated, adding to the unnecessary confusion.
The Shanghai Tourism Administration said the setting up and dismantling of boards of scenic spots has to be submitted in a written application by the site operators.
The museum operator said they were not aware of such procedures, but the administration said it would replace — and not remove — the sign with its contents changed, highlighting the location of the new, yet-to-be-ready museum.
