Congress accepts good advice
THE annual meeting of Shanghai's top political advisory body has received constructive advice which will contribute to a successful World Expo and the city's long-term economic development, a senior official said yesterday.
"The conference is fruitful, producing many important suggestions for us to improve our work," Yin Yicui, deputy secretary of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China, said at the closing ceremony of the local committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
The Shanghai People's Congress, the city's top legislative body, will conclude its annual session today, and Mayor Han Zheng is scheduled to host a press conference to address questions on the session.
Yin said this year political advisers offered many proposals on how to guarantee a safe, low-carbon and high-tech World Expo which were valuable for the organization of such a large international fair.
Over 1,000 proposals were collected during the past week.
They also included suggestions for curbing runaway housing prices, providing more employment support for graduates, raising service quality for old people, and accelerating Shanghai's shift to a service-driven economy.
The mechanism of the local committee of the CPPCC was set up in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded.
The session is usually held at the start of each year, serving to supervise and give advice on the government's work plan.
