Construction trucks to have cameras
AUTHORITIES are insisting that all construction trucks in the city be fitted with side view cameras for making right turns next year after a rise in accidents which have been blamed on the heavy vehicles.
A monitoring platform to supervise the 4,100-odd trucks that ply the roads has also been established.
There is a blind area when truck drivers turning right cannot clearly see pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles because the trucks are high. Police said it was a major cause of traffic accidents.
Moreover, there is a misalignment on the trajectory of the front wheel and the back wheel when the truck turns right, which means the back wheel can still roll over people standing about 1 meter away.
A screen about the size of an iPad next to the steering wheel can display the view captured by the cameras installed on the side of the truck.
Some trucks in the city have already installed with the camera. A truck driver surnamed Liu said the cameras were helpful. “If 10 people stand on the side of the truck, the screen can show all of them. Only eight can be seen from the rear-view mirror,” he said.
All 52 trucks of Shanghai Shengtao Construction Co Ltd, Liu’s company, have installed cameras for reverse, left and right turns. A single right-turn camera costs about 650 yuan (US$104.83), while three cameras — right, left and reverse — cost about 1,250 yuan in total.
But police warned that installing cameras may not be enough to prevent accidents as some drivers turn right too fast, making it impossible for them to brake in time.
