Controversy over Oriental Pearl TV Tower price hike

TICKET prices for the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower are to rise 20 yuan (US$3) next March when a cinema opens in its lowest sphere, managers said yesterday.

Currently, tickets cost 160 yuan and 220 yuan, depending on the attractions visited.

Children under 1.4 meters and seniors over 70 get a 50 percent discount.

With investment of 70 million yuan, the dome cinema being built at the bottom half of the lowest sphere will show a film imagining the city’s future, said an official surnamed Wang from the Shanghai Oriental Pearl (Group) Co.

“Visitors will be able to see Shanghai’s history in the underground exhibition hall, the current city landscape from the transparent sightseeing area that’s 259m up and the future of the city in the cinema in the lowest sphere,” Wang added.

The landmark building in the Lujiazui of the Pudong New Area attracts 5 million visitors a year and managers expect that the cinema will help attract more.

But web users were less convinced.

On the official Weibo account of the government information office, the majority of the 160 comments were critical.

“The current prices are expensive enough, how could they rise again?” Weibo user Putongputong commented.

A tourist in downtown told Shangahi Daily yesterday that this probably wouldn’t make a difference to many visitors.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime visit,” said Zhang Lei from Ningbo in neighboring Zhejiang Province. “But I wouldn’t spend the money again as it’s not cheap,” he added.
