Cooler weekend predicted but heat likely to make a comeback

a LATE-AUGUST cold front and tropical cyclone is expected to drive down the mercury this weekend, likely to bring some relief to the residents after over a month of sizzling weather.

The weather forecasters have said the temperatures would hover between 28 and 23 degree Celsius.

The low of 23 degrees will be the lowest since July, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The maximum temperature yesterday touched 34 degrees that brought with it a higher humidity rate with afternoon showers being reported in the northern part of the city.

Today’s high in the city is forecasted to be 36 degrees. It will be mostly cloudy with brief showers or thundershowers covering parts of the city.

As the peripheral influence of tropical storm Kong-Rey interacts with the cold front from the northern China, rainfalls and gusty winds are likely to occur tomorrow with the mercury dropping below 30 degrees.

Highs at the beginning of next week are forecast to go up slightly to about 30 degrees. Local students will enjoy cooler days with the start of the new semester next week.

But the bureau said that the heat was likely to reappear in September.

“For 25 years we saw high temperatures in September according to the 140-year weather record of the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau,” Zhang Ruiyi, a chief service officer at the bureau, said. “The last hottest day was recorded on September 27, 1947.”

Chinese maritime authorities have issued a yellow warning for waves brought by tropical storm Kong-rey, according to the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center yesterday.

Kong-rey, the 15th tropical storm to hit China this year, is expected to enter the southern part of the East China Sea, passing through waters northeast of Taiwan, from last night to this morning, the center said.
