Couple detained, fined for airline assault

A man and a woman who attacked a fellow passenger on a flight from Macau to Shanghai on Monday have been detained and fined, police said yesterday.

One of the assailants was a 52-year-old surnamed Wang who got into an argument with flight attendants after they asked him to switch off his cellphone and he refused.

When a passenger surnamed Liu, 47, who was sitting behind Wang, tried to help, Wang and his 26-year-old companion, surnamed Li, attacked him.

When the Shanghai Airlines flight landed at Hongqiao Airport about 3:50pm, police were waiting and Wang and Li were taken into custody.

Wang was given a 12-day detention and a 200 yuan (US$32) fine, while Li was given a 10-day detention and a 500 yuan fine.

Among the witnesses to the incident were actors Shen Lei and Xie Chengying. Xie said Liu suffered scratches to his neck and his jade necklace was broken, but he did not fight back.

Shen was among the passengers who provided witness testimony to police.
