Couple detained over scam
A MARRIED couple has been detained on suspicion of cheating money out of members of the public with the ruse they were out-of-towners who had run out of gasoline and needed help.
The husband and wife team is accused of conning people out of a combined 6,500 yuan (US$1,050) on three separate occasions on April 1.
The couple drove a rented BMW and told their victims they were in Shanghai on business but had run out of gasoline, police said. All of the incidents happened in the Pudong New Area, and Songjiang and Fengxian districts. Police were alerted to the scam by one of the victims and the couple were traced to a hotel in Songjiang.
More than 40 people have complained of people approaching them with the money-for-gas scam since April.
