Couple got son, 6, to steal phones
A COUPLE have been handed jail terms for getting their 6-year-old son to steal cellphones while the father distracted a store clerk.
The father, surnamed Diao, was in a food store near Shanghai South Railway Station on March 16 with his wife, surnamed Peng, and their son when he noticed that the clerk had left her iPhone on the counter.
Another cellphone was charging in an open drawer behind the counter.
Diao distracted the clerk, while Peng and their son were apparently playing.
His child stole the two phones worth 5,600 yuan (US$906) and the family left the store.
Diao was sentenced to nine months in prison and Peng to eight months with a one-year reprieve by Xuhui District People’s Court last week.
The couple were also fined 6,000 yuan by the court.
