Couple held over death of 2-year-old

AN ayi and her husband have been detained for suspected involvement in the death of a 2-year-old girl that the domestic helper was hired to take care of, city police said yesterday.
The girl, surnamed Feng, had no life signs but had multiple bruises on her body when the ayi took her to a hospital last Friday evening, said the hospital, which called the police.
Yuan Chunlan, a doctor at the Community Health Service Center of Jiuting Town in Songjiang District, said the ayi could not tell how long the girl had been in such a condition.
“The girl has several bruises on her legs and lumps on her scalp and face,” she said.
Police said the mother of the girl, surnamed Xiao, paid for the ayi, surnamed Gao, through a home service agency to take care of her daughter at night starting last month. But Xiao had been leaving her daughter entirely to Gao’s care from November 6, according to police.
