Couple hope to save charred savings
A couple whose 100,000 yuan (US$15,300) life savings went up in flames in a fire last week at their apartment in Fengxian District are hoping the central bank will buy back what’s left of the charred notes, Shanghai TV news reported yesterday.
The blaze broke out on February 10, while Wang Xiumei and her husband, who was not named, were at work, the report said, adding that the cash — mostly 100 and 20 yuan bills — was in a wardrobe that was badly damaged in the fire.
Anxious to save what they could of their nest egg, Wang, 64, and her husband, who hail from east China’s Anhui Province, on Tuesday took the overcooked bills to their local branch of Agricultural Bank of China, the report said.
Wang said that the money had taken the couple about seven years to save.
“I only get 1,800 yuan a month for washing dishes in a restaurant for 12 hours a day, seven days a week,” she said.
Her husband earns a meager living growing and selling fruit and vegetables, she added.
Gu Jie, the manager of the bank, said he would have to consult the People’s Bank of China on the issue.
“We don’t have the authority to determine how much the remnants of the bills are worth, so I will forward the matter to my superiors at the central bank,” he said.
