Courier firms hike pay to retain carriers

LOCAL courier companies are being forced to increase the salaries of delivery guys to retain them ahead of the Single’s Day shopping frenzy in November.

The ZTO, STO, YTO and Yunda express companies are now paying at least 2 yuan for each delivery from the current 1 to 1.5 yuan. Large parcels can fetch 3 yuan or more now.

“The company aims to encourage the delivery men to offer better services to our customers,” a YTO Express press officer told Shanghai Daily.

Local delivery men hand out about 50 parcels per day. With basic salary of about 2,000 yuan per month, they can earn an average monthly salary of about 4,000 yuan.

A ZTO official said the pay rise will boost the morale of the delivery men before the Single’s Day on November 11, which is the busiest period in a year. Each courier delivers over 100 packets a day during the period when online shoppers offer massive discounts to attract buyers.

There has been no hikes yet for consumers.

A record of 586 million parcels were delivered by about 2 million deliverymen for domestic courier firms during the Single’s Day week in 2014.

“We have to work over 12 hours a day during the week of the Single’s Day with no time even to take lunch,” said Liu Guangming, who delivers for STO Express.

The courier firms usually face a shortage of staff ahead of the craziest online shopping week in China as many delivery guys end up quitting because of the heavy work load. Most of them do not have long-term contracts, making it easier for them to simple walk away.
