Courier firms hike prices for holiday
LOCAL courier firms are planning to increase delivery charges from next week as they struggle with lack of hands just weeks before the Spring Festival.
Major courier firms like SF, STO, ZTO, YTO and Yunda said they were struggling with a shortage of staff as most of the delivery guys were heading home early for the Chinese New Year, which falls on February 19.
Most of them do not have long-term contracts with the companies, making it easier for them to take leave or simply quit during the festival.
SF Express said it would add 10 yuan (US$1.6) service fee for delivery during the festival while STO said it was planning to announce a hike soon.
The new fees will be charged between February 18-24 because of the higher cost on labor and transportation, SF Express said in a statement on its website.
Most of the courier firms said it will restore normal operations after February 24, but some deliveries will still be delayed after being accumulated during the holiday period.
