Couriers pare services, warn of holiday delays

THE city’s courier firms have warned of possible delays to parcel deliveries over the Spring Festival holiday, with some companies being forced to suspend services to selected provinces and regions due to a lack of staff.

Many labor-intensive industries experience operational difficulties over the annual Chinese New Year period, as hundreds of millions of people across the country — mostly migrant workers — head home for the holidays.

A spokesperson for SF Express told Shanghai Daily yesterday that it will maintain its regular service over the Spring Festival, though asked customers to be patient as delays are likely through February 14.

It said also that parcels sent between February 7 and 13 will be subject to a 10 yuan (US$1.50) service charge on top of the usual fee.

YTO Express, meanwhile, said it will distribute its reduced delivery staff according to customer demand in a bid to ensure as many packages as possible make their due delivery dates.

“As a lot of our couriers will be returning home for the holiday we will be short-staffed and will have to suspend services to some far-flung places, like Xinjiang and Tibet,” an unnamed staff member said.

“While it’s likely there will be some delays, we will do all we can to keep things moving,” he said.

An employee of STO Express told Shanghai Daily that the company will suspend all deliveries to Fujian and Jiangxi from Saturday, while a Yunda courier said his employer was planning to suspend selected services for the first two weeks of February.

The China Post-owned EMS service, meanwhile, which is known for its slow but steady service, said it will continue to operate as normal throughout the holiday period, though said that due to staff shortages some parcels could be delayed by up to three days.
