Court: Pay widow of killed john

AN insurance company has been ordered to pay compensation of 400,000 yuan (US$58,582) to a widow whose husband was killed in a prostitution dispute, a court said yesterday.

The Pudong New Area People's Court ruled that visiting prostitutes, while immoral, isn't a crime. So the insurance company should pay up.

The insurance company, argued that the victim's policy excluded compensation for accidents which take place in the course of a crime.

The company wasn't identified by the court.

The victim surnamed Su, in his 30s, visited a prostitute surnamed Li on May 31, 2008.

Su refused to pay and Li called her boyfriend Xia Xiaoxing for help. Xia quarreled with Su and stabbed his chest with a fruit knife. Su died from massive hemorrhage. Xia later received a life sentence.

Su's wife surnamed Zhang, though ashamed of the circumstances of her husband's death, asked the insurance company to compensate her because Su's employer had bought an accident insurance for the employees.

The company refused, saying Su had committed a crime by patronizing the prostitute.

The court said prostitute visiting goes against social morality. But it doesn't violate the criminal law.
