Court grants divorce in HIV case

A COURT granted a Shanghai man a divorce because his wife didn't tell him she was HIV positive before they married.

The woman, surnamed Nong, admitted she had known about her health condition before the marriage but concealed the truth, the Pudong New Area People's Court heard.

The man surnamed Fan, 28, from the Pudong New Area, met Nong, a Yunnan Province native who was in Shanghai to see her aunt.

The two fell in love and soon started living together. They married on July 22, 2010, and had a routine health check.

The Pudong Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Nong was HIV positive. She had to tell Fan she was an HIV carrier. The couple then had frequent arguments and Nong returned to Yunnan.

Fan sued for divorce last October, arguing his wife intentionally hid her condition.

Nong didn't attend the hearing and the court granted the divorce.
