Court promotes use of technology

THE Shanghai Maritime Court published a series of measures yesterday aimed at incorporating big data and artificial intelligence into its work.

A big data platform is set for completion by the end of this year, allowing information sharing between the city’s shipping exchange, port operators and government departments, including maritime, transportation and weather authorities.

Artificial intelligence technology will be embedded into the system to study data and generate reports. The goal is to save judges time reading and sorting through information.

The court is also stepping up efforts to help the nation become an international center of maritime justice. Such efforts come amid the city’s pledge to become a world-leading shipping hub.

The court said it will invite foreign maritime experts to take part in trials, establish mechanisms to protect the rights of foreign crews and conduct more remote video trials as it works to attract foreigners to file maritime lawsuits in Shanghai.
