Court rules in dispute over home
A COURT has ruled that an American's ex-wife and her mother, also Americans, are the legal owners of a downtown apartment.
However, they have been ordered to pay him more than 100,000 yuan (US$14,641) to cover his contribution to loan repayments and decoration.
Jing'an District People's Court heard that the man and his then wife bought the apartment on Zhaojiaqiao Road in October 2005 for 3.25 million yuan.
The wife's mother said she covered the down payment and other fees totalling 1.8 million yuan. The couple paid 113,000 yuan before they divorced in July 2008. After that, the woman's mother paid the rest, the court heard.
She asked the court to rule on ownership.
The former husband said the couple had paid the down payment, but his ex-wife backed her mother in court.
The court didn't name the people involved.
