Court ruling after girl’s death

A nanny and a bus driver convicted of causing an 8-year-old girl’s death in a road accident have each been granted a one-year reprieve from a 12-month sentence, Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.

The accident occurred on May 16 when the girl, identified as Tong Xiaomeng, had just been picked up from Fushan Foreign Language Primary School by her nanny, surnamed Wang.

They were riding on a motorbike and using the motor vehicle lane. Tong fell off the back seat and into the middle of the road when the motorbike collided with a bicycle, at which point a bus driver surnamed Gu was pulling out to overtake. A rear wheel of the bus ran over Tong, and she died at the spot, the court said.

Wang and Gu were detained on June 22 and stood trial on August 26.As both defendants had handed themselves over to police and Tong’s parents had shown forgiveness, they receieved lighter sentences, according to the court decision made on Saturday.
