Court to handle airline disputes
SHANGHAI will host an international court of arbitration to tackle aviation disputes, according to an agreement signed yesterday.
The deal was made by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), China Air Transport Association (CATA) and Shanghai International Arbitration Center (SHIAC).
Jeffrey Shane, general counsel for IATA, said the court will be the only facility to specialize in disputes arising in the air transport sector.
IATA’s 240 member carriers have developed a set of arbitration rules for the settlement of business disputes with as little disruption as possible, he said.
CATA, SHIAC and IATA have also assembled a group of experts to help guide the new organization.
Representatives of Boeing, Airbus, Lufthansa and China’s major airlines attended the signing ceremony.
China’s 49 airlines carried 354 million passengers last year.
