Courts get tough on 鈥榙eadbeats鈥
SHANGHAI’S courts have increased rates of enforcing judgements after strengthened efforts and tough punishments against “deadbeats” — people or organizations ignoring their obligations, the Shanghai Higher People’s Court said yesterday.
For the 120,200 cases received in the first 11 months of the year, the settlement rate increased 6.7 percent to 62 percent over the same period of last year.
The crackdown included some disputes which have been running for years.
In one telephone fraud case decided by the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court in 2010, a man was sentenced to life after swindling more than 168 million yuan (US$24 million) from 500 people.
He then invested the money in a range of projects around the country, making it difficult for authorities to trace.
