Covers can’t hide lack of trains
COVERED walkways complete with electric fans have been provided for passengers queuing to get into Line 16 stations.
While passengers have welcomed this respite from the summer heat, they say the real problem is not enough trains on the line that opened seven months ago.
“It didn’t solve the real problem for us, as I still waited for some 40 minutes before being able to get on a train,” a passenger identified as Zhong Yuan commented on Shanghai Metro’s official Weibo account.
“Trains with more carriages and shorter intervals between them are what we really need,” added Zhong.
Passengers have been complaining of queuing outside for long periods at stations such as Heshahangcheng and East Zhoupu when crowd control measures are enforced during rush hour.
Heshahangcheng Station rearranged its crash barriers, creating a “snake-shaped” tunnel covered by sun shades and fitted with six electric fans. More platform space was also made available.
Some commuters said the time they had to spend before entering the station was shortened by about 10 minutes.
Sun shades have also been fitted outside at East Zhoupu station.
Partly a sightseeing line, with stops including Shanghai Wild Animal Park, Line 16 uses three-carriage trains.
Operator Shanghai Shentong Group has said it will complete converting some trains to six carriages this year.
