Crackdown on excessive honking
OBNOXIOUSLY leaning on your car’s horn for no good reason could prove expensive.
City police yesterday said they have stepped up their campaign to curb unnecessary honking within the Outer Ring Road and are hitting drivers where it hurts — in the wallet. Thousands of drivers who have been caught committing the offense recently have been fined 100 yuan (US$16).
Street signs have been erected to remind drivers of the ban, and more police officers are patrolling on motorcycles to catch offenders red-handed. “When an officer sees an offense but fails to stop the driver on time, he will ask his colleagues to stop and punish the driver,” said Wang Hui, an official at Pudong Traffic Police.
Plainclothes police officers in Pudong are also teaming up with bus company inspectors to catch bus drivers who cannot resist the urge to honk.
