Crackdown on illegal taxis off to good start
TRAFFIC authorities impounded almost 400 vehicles and detained more than 100 drivers last month during a crackdown on the illegal taxi trade.
The campaign was launched on March 5 and will run for three months, the Shanghai Traffic Law Enforcement Team said. It will specifically target cloned taxis and private cars operating as cabs around the city’s transportation hubs.
As of Tuesday, 333 private cars and 59 cloned taxis had been seized by police, and 109 drivers had been detained. The worst 15 offenders had all of their 12 license points deducted, which means they will be unable to drive again until completing a course in traffic law studies.
A driver surnamed Huang of one of the cloned taxis was given a 30-day detention. He told police he bought the vehicle — which resembled a Dazhong Co taxi — for 18,000 yuan (US$2,900).
The car was fitted with a top light and meter, while the seller even provided Huang with a driver’s uniform, a meter accelerator and empty public transportation cards.
Unscrupulous drivers sometimes steal credit-filled transport cards when passengers use them to settle a fare, and hand back empty ones.
Drivers found guilty of illegally operating a cab are subject to a fine of between 10,000 and 50,000 yuan.
In cases involving repeat offenders or where a separate crime has been committed, the penalty is a detention or worse, officials said.
