Cribs fail quality tests

A number of children’s products, including a batch of Les enphants’ cribs, have been found to be substandard, the city’s quality watchdog said yesterday ahead of Children’s Day.
The volume of substandard children’s products sold online is much higher than what is sold in department stores and shops, Shanghai Quality Inspection and Supervision found.
Fifteen batches of cribs sold online were tested and only 6.7 percent passed.
In total, the bureau checked 32 batches of cribs, and found that 31.3 percent were up to standard.
“Many online stores are not concerned about quality as they want to sell things cheap, and it is usually more difficult for consumers to detect quality problems when they shop online,” said Shen Weimin, deputy director of the bureau.
The Les enphants’ wooden beds sold at the Buyecheng outlet at Pacific Department Store failed due to design problems and improper labelling, posing potential hazards, said the bureau.
Another batch of wooden cribs labeled “Yeehoo” being sold at the Shanghai New World Department Store failed for the same reasons, the bureau said.
Design, instructions and labelling were the biggest problems with substandard cribs.
