Crumbs of comfort over dining cards
DINERS who bought pre-paid cards with a restaurant chain’s city branches that closed without warning recently can get 40 percent of their cash back, commerce officials said yesterday.
Holders of DainTi Hill’s cards were left out of pocket after all five outlets in Shanghai closed and operator Shanghai Zhanyuan Catering Management Co Ltd, could not be contacted, the Shanghai Commission of Commerce said.
Taiwan-founded DainTi Hill is well-known for its creative fusion dishes.
However, Shanghai Zhanyuan had signed a one-year insurance agreement with several insurance companies last September.
Claims of 2.5 million yuan (US$403,226) have been made to partly reimburse cardholders, the commission said.
Diners must still bear the loss of 60 percent of the money left their cards, said Chen Min, a market regulation official at the commission.
In May, DainTi Hill restaurants in Shanghai, in commercial areas like Wujiaochang in Yangpu District, Wujiang Rd in Jing’an and Xujiahui in Xuhui District, began closing one by one.
Zhanyuan’s offices on Hongqiao Road also closed in May.
The commission said it received more than 20 complaints related to the restaurant’s pre-paid cards.
The commerce commission and the Shanghai Bureau of China Insurance Regulatory Commission initiated a joint insurance entity involving seven insurance companies, to minimize losses for pre-paid card owners last year.
About 40 businesses issuing prepaid cards have signed up.
