Curtain set to rise at new theater in mid-2016
THE structural transformation of the former Tianshan Cinema on Tianshan Road in Changning District into the Hongqiao Culture and Art Center is nearing completion, but it will still be another six months before the public can make use of it, an official said yesterday.
The renovation of the former picture house, which was built in 1979, has been ongoing for the past three years. The new center will feature a 1,000-seat theater and seven movie screens.
“Testing will begin early next year, with the official opening likely to be about May,” said Yao Xuying, deputy manager of the company that will operate the new center.
“Once fully up and running, the theater will host a range of performances, from operas and musicals to dramatic and dance productions,” he said, adding that the sound and lighting systems are “state of the art.”
“We have already been in contact with several production companies in Japan and South Korea about putting on shows,” he said.
According to an unnamed local government official, the theater will be the largest in Changning, and therefore capable of staging productions on a scale never before seen in the district or indeed anywhere in the western reaches of the city.
