Custody battle over 6-year-old survivor

A SIX-YEAR-OLD Shanghai girl, who won a 387,000 yuan compensation case on Thursday against a kindergarten school for severe burns, is now locked in a custody battle, the Xinmin Evening News reported yesterday.

The little girl's troubles began on March 2011 when she tripped over a metal drum filled with boiling water in the kindergarten.

She was admitted to Shanghai Ruijin Hospital with 36 percent of her body covered in scars from multiple burns, which limited mobility of both her arms and legs.

The kindergarten paid over 400,000 yuan for medical expenses.

On Thursday, a Chongming court ordered the kindergarten to pay another 387,000 yuan for her injuries.

But her troubles did not end after she was discharged from the hospital.

In July 2011, her father Jiang Tao killed her mother Li Mei with a kitchen knife over an extra-marital affair.

Jiang slashed Li's head and face that ruptured an artery that led to her death. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

After the father was sent to jail, Li's ex-husband Zhang Yu showed up to take care of the girl.

In November 2011, Zhang filed a lawsuit, demanding that the kindergarten pay 460,000 yuan as compensation for the girl's disability and mental anguish.

Although Zhang cared for the girl, Jiang told the judge he wanted his own brother, Jiang Wang, to take the custody of the child.

The court has temporarily appointed Zhang as the guardian of the girl.
