Dad seriously hurt jumping to get his son a drink

A FATHER was seriously injured with a broken back and hip in Putuo District yesterday after attempting to bypass a department store escalator and jump down one story to reach his son, who was in a play area and complaining that he was thirsty.
The father, 33, remained in the hospital, according to a Shanghai television report.
The man was at the Changfeng Jing River Plaza with his wife and son, and the boy had gone to the store's playground area.
About 1:30pm, the son asked for something to drink. The father, for reasons that were unclear, tried to jump from the third floor onto a small platform by the escalator, and then to the second floor to get his son a drink, the report said.
He missed the platform and landed face-down on the second story's marble floor.
Authorities were checking the design of the area where the father fell to see if there were any safety loopholes, the report said.
