Damp squib again for firework celebrations

FIREWORK tradition is going to be a damp squib again this year.
Local residents wanting to buy fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate the Spring Festival as a Chinese tradition will find it harder to do so as the city will reduce business licenses and supplies to further curb pollution and security risks.
Business licenses for selling fireworks and firecrackers will be cut to only nine stores in suburban districts from 84 last Spring Festival, while the volume of fireworks and firecrackers will also be reduced from 50,000 to 3,000 boxes in 2017, authorities said.
All legally available fireworks will be inventory stock and no new products will be restocked from outside Shanghai.
Last year, the licensed vendors and supplies of fireworks were halved to 650 and 150,000 boxes respectively from 2014.
“Security is one of the most important things to ensure our residents to have a safe and happy Chinese New Year,” said Jiang Ping, a member of the standing committee of the Party’s Shanghai Committee.
He also pointed to the Tuesday blast at a Mexican fireworks market that killed at least 31 people.
Local police also released a notice yesterday to again remind the public about the local regulation of fireworks, which came into effect on January 1 and bans fireworks inside the Outer Ring Road on all days, and throughout the city during heavily polluted days.
Firework buyers are required to show their identity card numbers, addresses and contact information when buying fireworks.
