Dangerous gas cookers seized

FORTY gas cookers sold at two supermarkets in Songjiang District were seized by the city’s quality watchdog yesterday.
They were deemed highly dangerous because they lacked a “flame failure device,” officials said.
The gas cookers — branded Yinghuang, Laisi and Hongpai — were sold at two outlets of Century Hualian and Ruhai on Gulang Road. Thirteen models were involved, with the most expensive costing around 200 yuan (US$29). They were produced in Changshu, Jiangsu Province.
The gas stoves have been sent to laboratories for further tests, and businesses involved face a fine of up to three times the product value for violating China’s product quality law, according to Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau.
Illegal profits will be confiscated and business licenses might even be revoked if the case is judged as very serious, the bureau said.
A flame failure device cuts off gas supply automatically within seconds if the flame goes out accidentally due to wind or water overflow. The device helps to prevent accidents, the bureau said.
If the gas cooker flame goes out unexpectedly, “failure in shutting off the gas supply will very likely lead to gas leakage, fire and explosion, which are very big safety hazards,” said Zheng Wenting, an inspection official with the bureau.
Some businesses incorporated a fake flame failure device to save costs, Zheng added.
