Day care scheme is ready to roll

GOVERNMENT-RUN day care centers for elementary school pupils will next week begin taking applications for the “Love Summer Care” program, an official said yesterday.

The scheme, which was launched last year by the Shanghai Youth League Committee, provides care for youngsters while their parents are at work.

A total of 243 centers across the city will take part in the scheme this year, 14 more than in 2014.

Parents are charged 600 yuan (US$97) per child for three weeks’ care, which is less than the amount charged by some privately owned centers, said Shen Hui, an official in charge of the program in Yangjing Town in the Pudong New Area.

He said he expects interest in the places available in Yangjing to be high.

“Last year, some parents queued overnight to secure one of the 40 places on offer,” he said.

“I expect demand to be even higher this year.”

About 20,000 of Shanghai’s 700,000 children of elementary school age are expected to find places in the program this year.

As well as general care, children involved in the scheme will be given instruction on emergency survival skills and traditional Chinese culture, Liu Gang, deputy Secretary of the Shanghai Youth League Committee, told Shanghai Daily.

The enrolment fee — which includes lunches and insurance — is standard across the centers, though some may make additional charges for extra activities such as sightseeing trips, he said.

Competition for places is expected to be highest in urban areas, Liu said.

“We know there’s a shortage, but we’re doing our best to make as many places available as possible,” he said.
