Day-care centers plan boosted by unions’ fair

TRADE union officials gathered at a consultation fair yesterday to help set up day-care centers to better serve working parents and their children.
The fair was set up by the city’s general trade union.
Being unable to find a day-care center or pick up children after school are challenges shared by many working parents in the city.
To address such problems, the city’s general trade union encourages trade unions of local employers and grass-roots authorities to set up centers to provide day-care or summer holiday care services for working parents.
The city has set up 59 day-care centers in local companies and subdistricts this year, which has exceeded the general trade union’s target of 50 set at the beginning of the year.
A day-care center set up by Jiangning Road subdistrict’s trade union started trial operations last Monday. More employees working in the subdistrict are inquiring about how to reserve a place for their children next term.
“As we do not have courses or teachers, we work with a local education institution, which provided a discounted price for employees in the subdistrict,” said Wang Bin, deputy chairwoman of the trade union.
The fair attracted 41 education institutions and related service providers.
The courses they can provide include painting, learning English, and martial arts.
Most of the institutions said they could either send teachers to the companies setting up day centers or the companies can buy the institutions’ service and send children to their venues.
The general trade union said day-care centers that do not have enough staff can apply for volunteers during the summer vacation, as the union will work with the city’s Youth League Committee to recruit volunteers to support the day-care centers during the summer vacation.
