Death sentence for killing wife

A man over 60 years old who killed his wife was sentenced to death with two years’ reprieve at Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court yesterday.
The man, surnamed Niu, didn’t seek to appeal the ruling.
Niu killed his wife, surnamed Zhang, using both a butcher’s knife and a kitchen knife at a local grocery market last March, injuring her in the face and neck, the court said.
Zhang, who suffered domestic violence from Niu over a long time, left him to come to live in Shanghai, according to the court. She refused his demands to return home.
Niu claimed that Zhang cheated on him, but a witness said Zhang had not had any affairs with other men, the court added.
