Death sentence in abduction of girl

A man who plotted a kidnap last year that killed a four-year-old girl was sentenced to death in Shanghai yesterday.
One of his two accomplices received a life sentence and the other, only 16 years old at the time, got a 12-year jail term at the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court.
Zhang Dong acted along with the others as the victim, surnamed Zhuo, was playing alone on the first floor of her family's hotel. The three taped her mouth and neck, then stuffed her into a suitcase and brought the suitcase to a hotel room in suburban Songjiang District on November 20.
Zhang telephoned the girl's parents, demanding a ransom of 700,000 yuan. Police found the little girl several hours later, dead of suffocation.
The court said Zhang had planned the abduction for a long time. One of the three perpetrators was an employee of an amusement arcade above the hotel of Zhuo's family, another used to work there and the third was their friend.
Zhuo's parents, from neighboring Zhejiang Province, said earlier that they knew some of the suspects.
