‘Decades of abuse led to murder’

AN elderly woman charged with bludgeoning her husband to death claimed she had endured decades of abuse.

The 69-year-old woman, surnamed Li, is alleged to have beaten her husband, surnamed Zhang, to death with a length of iron water pipe while he was taking a nap in May.

She is said to have stayed in the house with the body and attempted suicide.

Li was discovered when her children called round two days later as they were concerned that they hadn’t heard from their parents in Jiading District.

Her family reported Li to police and she has been charged by Jiading District Procuratorate with murder.

Li told prosecutors that she and her husband were married for 48 years and that he began beating here after their son and daughter were born, sometimes using an iron water pipe.

She thought about seeking a divorce when the violence started, but decided to stay for the sake of their young children, Li told prosecutors.

In a quarrel shortly before he was killed, Zhang was said to have threatened to harm their children and grandchildren unless Li moved out.

Li is said to have killed him at noon on May 5, as he slept on the sofa.

Her children told prosecutors that their mother had endured ill-treatment for years and pleaded for a light punishment.
