Decorating market is closed in Minhang
A popular home decoration market in Minhang District will be closed from today and demolished by June 30 due to a mass of illegal structures and safety concerns, the government said yesterday.
Jiuxing Market in Qibao Town has long drawn people looking for paint, wallpaper, laminate flooring and other home decoration materials, but its popularity has also attracted unauthorized vendors and illegal buildings to house them.
The town government plans to raze the entire site, which comprises numerous legal and illegal structures, and redevelop it as a contemporary commercial center, the Qibao government said.
About 85 percent of the registered vendors, of which there are more than 10,000, have moved out. Some 15 percent of buildings inside the market, covering 180,000 square meters, have been demolished, an official with the township government said.
The entrances to the market will be closed from today while electricity will be cut off to force the remaining vendors to leave, he added.
Since its opening in 1998, the market has lured out-of-towners in search of business opportunities, but their arrival has been a major contributor to its degradation, according to the government. Many of the illegal shop houses were erected by unlicensed traders, who lived inside them, posing a fire hazard risk.
The registered vendors have been relocated to other markets in Qingpu, Jiading and Jinshan districts. Cash and other incentives are offered to those willing to go.
The township government has invited designing institutes to redevelop the area, which has been planned as a “commercial landmark” with high-end business district and residential communities, the official said.
