Defaulter will spend time in jail
A DEFAULTER who was the subject of a court order restricting his spending habits has been jailed for six months for illegally crossing the border with Myanmar to evade the ban, Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said yesterday.
The businessman, surnamed Shen, had been barred from “high-expenditure consumption.”
To evade the restrictions, Shen paid 320,000 yuan (US$46,117) to an immigration agent, surnamed Jiang, to obtain a Myanmar identity card, the court said.
In January 2017, Shen illegally crossed the border and obtained a Myanmar passport. Later, he used the fake passport to travel between two countries five times.
He even impersonated a Myanmar worker and obtained work and residence permits from Chinese authorities.
In May 2018, Shanghai police received a tip-off and caught him.
On charges of illegally crossing the border, he was sentenced to six months behind bars and fined 20,000 yuan.
Jiang is yet to face trial.
