Defibrillators being put in public places

AUTOMATED external defibrillators (AEDs) are being installed in public places to get help quicker to people showing symptoms leading to cardiac arrest.

A total of 310 AEDs are being installed in Pudong International Airport, Metro stations and scenic spots such as Oriental Land in Qingpu District, said the Shanghai branch of the Red Cross Society of China.

These portable automated device can restore normal heart rhythm, preventing brain damage or death.

Training on how to use and maintain the machines, plus other first aid skills, will be provided to staff and volunteers, said officials.

The initiative is expected to be expanded to cover the whole city following this trial.

Its launch on Saturday coincided with 16th World First Aid Day.

Most people who experience the irregular heartbeat that progresses to full cardiac arrest can survive if they receive defibrillation within 20 or 30 seconds.

The survival rate drops by 10 percent with every minute of delay in emergency treatment.

In many cases of cardiac sudden death, it may have taken 10 minutes or more before professionals reach the scene, meaning the optimum time of treatment was missed.

City lawmakers and political advisers have previously proposed installing these AEDs in public places.
