Demolition of copper factory nearing an end
THE demolition of a copper factory in Yangpu District that was ordered to close last year due to its poor environmental record will be completed by the end of the month, a local official said yesterday.
The factory on Zhoujiazui Road, which was operated by state-owned Chinalco Shanghai Copper Co, was targeted as part of the city government’s efforts to relocate about 1,000 heavy polluting enterprises out of residential areas this year.
It is not clear if the plant will reopen in a new location, but the existing site will be cleared before the end of August, the district’s environment bureau said in a press release.
Chinalco was given the option to upgrade its facilities and operations to reduce emissions, but was unable to meet the criteria set by the local authorities, said environment official Xiong Xin.
The decision was therefore taken to pull the plant down, he said, adding that the district government will work with the company to find new positions for the people who lost their jobs as a result of the closure.
