Depressed mother ‘strangled baby’
A MOTHER suffering from depression strangled her 1-month-old baby girl in the Pudong New Area on Sunday while the baby’s grandmother was out, local media reported yesterday.
She was taken by police for questioning, it was reported.
The woman, surnamed Gao, has reportedly had depression for four years. Her condition improved under treatment, but she is said to have stopped taking her medication while pregnant for fear of the side effects.
Gao’s mother said obstetricians had advised her to keep a close eye on the baby and not leave the child alone with her mother for fear that she may harm the infant.
But as Gao’s father was hospitalized, the grandmother had to take care of her husband, her daughter and her granddaughter.
When she returned home and saw that something was wrong with the child, the grandmother called an ambulance.
Gao is reported to have admitted to a doctor that she strangled her child.
