Despite the cold weather it isn鈥檛 winter
THINK yesterday was cold? It was the coldest morning since June — but winter it wasn’t.
Winter arrives when the average temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days. The first day of the five is regarded as the beginning of the new season.
At 7am yesterday, the temperature in downtown Xujiahui area was recorded at 5.4 degrees Celsius, and it was only 2.1 degrees on Chongming Island.
Even the high of the day just hovered around 11 degrees, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
This round of cool weather, the strongest cold snap so far in the latter half of the year, is near its end, forecasters say. This week is set to be cloudy with intermittent drizzle, and the mercury will climb at the start of the week.
The high will rise to 13 degrees today and 14 degrees tomorrow. On Wednesday, the low will return to 10 degrees. Thursday is set to have a break from rain, but the low will fall to 7 degrees, forecasters said.
Shanghai usually enters winter in early December. Last year, however, winter came earlier, beginning on November 23.
Air quality will be fine today and tomorrow. Residents are warned of possible light pollution from the hazardous to health PM2.5 particles on Wednesday.
