Detention for disrespect of national song
AN online live show host will be detained for five days for allegedly parodying China’s national anthem, Shanghai police said yesterday.
Police said they started their investigation after some netizens reported that the host, a 20-year-old woman surnamed Yang, sang the national anthem on a live show on the evening of October 7 in a way that was not duly respectful.
Yang was said to have sung the anthem deliberately out of tune and with a smile to its solemn lyrics. Police in Jing’an District, where Yang lives and broadcasts her show on huya.com, handed out the punishment to her for her violation of China’s law on the national anthem.
Yang issued a public statement of apology on October 10 calling her behavior “of bad taste and foolish.”
