Detention for hungry hostage taker 鈥榳ho wanted prison meal鈥
A MAN who claimed he took a woman hostage in order to get a meal in prison has received a five-month detention, the Xuhui District People’s Court ruled yesterday.
The hostage taker, surnamed Ren, who arrived in the city to find a job this April, failed in his efforts and ran out of money, the court heard.
As he hadn’t had anything to eat for a couple of days, he decided to commit a crime in order to get a meal in prison.
On April 28, he grabbed a woman passerby and held her at knifepoint while urging the crowd that formed around them to call the police.
Ren said in court that he’d had no intention of harming the woman.
