Dianping website sues Baidu over copied restaurant data

SHANGHAI Hantao Information Consulting Co, operator of the restaurant rating website dianping.com, is demanding 90 million yuan (US$14.4 million) in compensation from Baidu Inc and Shanghai Jietusoft for unfair competition.

In its lawsuit — accepted yesterday by the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court — the company claimed Baidu copied customer comments and information about restaurants from the Dianping site and used it on its own maps.

The copying has been ongoing since 2012 and has caused Hantao huge losses, the plaintiff said.

Hantao said Jietusoft should be held equally responsible as it used Baidu’s map service on its website. Both companies should immediately cease using the information, the suit said.
