Didi driver held ‘after injuring cop’

AN unlicensed Didi driver accused of knocking down a policeman carrying out a routine check and leading police on a high-speed chase has been arrested for dangerous driving and endangering public safety.

Putuo District proscutors said that last October 18, the suspect surnamed Sun, 32, who was working for the car-hailing app Didi, was stopped by a traffic police officer in a routine check. As he couldn’t show his driving license, he tried to drive off, prosecutors said.

The officer, who was holding on to the car’s hood, was knocked down and suffered injuries to his right hand and left knee.

That didn’t stop Sun, despite having a fare-paying passenger in his car. He sped through crowded streets in peak hours, jumping red lights, changing lanes carelessly, and broke through a roadblock, prosecutors said.

Sun told police, “I was afraid of stricter punishment if police found I’m an unlicensed driver. If so, I would be detained 15 days for unlicensed driving and have my car seized for illegal operation,” prosecutors said. They added that Sun had his license revoked last April due to drunk driving. He had used his uncle’s ID to register as a Didi driver.

Two months after the incident, Shanghai’s rules on online car-hailing service took effect. Now if a driver causes an accident, platforms are duty-bound to take measures, such as dropping an offending driver from their books. But because Sun’s alleged offenses took place before the change of rules, Didi was not punished.
