Didi reactivates ‘hitch-hiking’
RIDE-HAILING app Didi Chuxing will partially reactivate its “hitch-hiking” service in the city during night hours from Friday.
The service will be available between 10pm and midnight as well as 5am to 6am, after Didi suspended the service from 10pm to 6am following a murder in early May of a female passenger in central China. Meanwhile the company stipulated that passengers and drivers must be of the same sex.
Didi is also planning to introduce a new feature which lets passengers share their location in real-time with an emergency contact. Didi will be monitoring the passenger’s location and says it will act if the trip heads somewhere other than the stipulated destination. The new feature will be tested in several cities from June 22. Shanghai is not one of the test cities.
