Disgruntled man locks 10 workers in office, threatens to burn them alive

A MAN saying he was owed money locked 10 staff members of a downtown company in their office today and poured what was suspected to be paint thinner on the door, threatening to burn them alive.

The man, in his 30s, showed up with his wife at the company’s office on Huai’an Road, in Jing’an District, at 9:30am. The couple claimed the company has owed them money for two years.

After an hour of quarreling, the man produced a lock and imprisoned the 10 workers in their office. He then poured a liquid petroleum product at the entrance to the office and threatened to burn everybody to death, himself included.

Armed police arrived on the scene after receiving a report and urged the man to unlock the door. The couple was taken away by police at 11:40am.

According to a worker from the building, the man was a supplier for the company. He has been trying to get his money since last year, but still hasn’t managed to see the company owner, the worker said.

The company purchases domestic goods for their customers overseas. Words painted in red could be spotted on the glass at the entrance gate to the building, sayind “pay back money” and “liar.”

The case is still under investigation.
