District inspects objects at height

HUANGPU District has launched inspections on all outdoor objects at height, including shop signboards, external air-conditioning units, curtain wall glass and lamp boxes.
On August 12, a collapsed signboard claimed three lives on Nanjing Road E., only about 300 meters from the Bund.
The General Office of the Shanghai People’s Government issued a notice on August 13 which urged authorities to take safety precautions and eliminate other potential falling hazards.
Huangpu District is planning to introduce standards to regulate the safety of objects at height, said Hong Jiliang, deputy director of the district. The regulation will be implemented before October 1.
According to the district official, there are 13,598 signboards in Huangpu. By Saturday, the district’s greenery authority found 2,477 signboards which failed to meet safety requirements. About 1,400 of these signboards were removed and over 1,000 were reinforced.
The inspections continued yesterday. At the junction of Nanjing Road E. and Shanxi Road S., workers found that the welded joints of the signboard of famed food store Shao Wan Sheng had loosened.
Meanwhile, at Paris Court, built in the 1930s on Chongqing Road S., a crew was replacing the awnings on the historic building’s exterior.
The awnings were installed in 2008 as part of decorations to welcome the 2010 World Expo.
