District official stands on trial for corruption

A SENIOR district official stood on trial at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court yesterday for taking bribes totaling more than 1.91 million yuan (US$310,757).

Wang Jun, 54, accepted two tusks worth 500,000 yuan from a man when he was the deputy director and later director of the tourism office in Xuhui District between 1992 and 2002. Prosecutors claim Wang accepted 300,000 yuan in cash and gold commemorative coins worth 119,800 yuan from a bank chairman, when he was deputy director of Songjiang District from 2007. A real estate boss also paid him 1 million yuan.
